Scammers bagged over $500k from 15+ X breaches
More than 15 X accounts were recently compromised, with hackers launching fraudulent Solana meme coins and pocketing around $500,000.
A threat actor targeting Solana (GROUND) Meme investors and X-pages made around half a million dollars by promoting fraudulent tokens through hacked social media pages, blockchain detective ZachXBT revealed on December 24.
Popular accounts like Brett (BRETT), Kick Streaming and Alex Blania were all violated. In each case, the hijacked page would advertise a new coin and share a contract address, inviting unsuspecting victims to invest in SOL.
ZachXBT has spotted more than 15 incidents since November 26, all dating back to a concentrated effort by an unknown bad actor.
How the X-hackers gained access
ZachXBT’s investigation showed that fraudsters deployed scare tactics to steal passwords and other credentials. The hacker allegedly impersonates X support agents, claiming that users have violated terms of service and copyright policies.
X has become a global public square since Elon Musk bought the company formerly known as Twitter. A vision of freedom of expression and compensation for creators has prompted more projects to build brands on the social network.
Hackers exploited the prominence of ZachXBT advised the public to “limit email address reuse across services” and also use “security keys for 2FA on important accounts” to strengthen personal cybersecurity.
