Solana L2 Sonic to launch native token on January 7
Sonic, the Solana Virtual Machine channel for games and applications on Solana, will reveal its native SONIC token on January 7.
On December 31, the Sonic team declared the Layer 2 chain token generation event on Solana (GROUND) will have 57% of the total token supply allocated to the community. The distribution will include ecosystem-only SONIC, initial claims and Sonic HyperGrid rewards.
The TGE announcement comes just days after gaming platform Solana L2 announced plans to airdrop its native tokens to TikTok users. SONIC will power the gaming-centric blockchain and its multi-Solana virtual machine ecosystem.
Sonic will have a total supply of 2.4 billion tokens, with 15% expected to enter circulation during the TGE.
According to the L2 project, the SONIC initial claim snapshot was completed on December 31, 2024. This opens an airdrop of 7% of the total supply for the initial claim, with the community able to access the eligibility checker on January 3 .
The launch of the SONIC token is part of the Solana project phase 1 roadmap. Phase 2 includes mainnet alpha, support for Sonic X Android and iOS apps, and token bridge integration. The project will also target HyperGrid optimistic rollups and the release of Sonic Grid v2 in 2025.
Regarding the token, the team plans to announce the listing on centralized exchanges and decentralized exchanges based on Solana through its social channels.
