Ondo poised for 1.9b token unlock

Ondo Finance, the real-world asset tokenization platform, is preparing for a major unlock of its governance token.

According to Tokenomist, Ondo Finance (ONDO) will unlock over 1.9 billion locked ONDO tokens on January 17, 2025 at 7 p.m. EST. The total value of the release, which represents an inflow of 134%, is estimated at around $2.44 billion.

Tokenomist, formerly TokenUnlocks, watch indicates that the next version of ONDO will be divided into three key allocations:

Around 792 million ONDO (40% of the release) is allocated for ecosystem growth, while around 825 million ONDO (42%) is reserved for protocol development. The remaining tokens will be earmarked for private sales.

Huge Tokens unlock normally see a bearish reaction market, which in this case could see the price of ONDO fall.

The altcoin was trading around $1.25, slightly in the red on the day, as the protocol closed in on the massive supply influx. However, ONDO’s price has increased alongside the broader market over the past year after its token was last unlocked. The cryptocurrency’s value has surged 673% over the past year from a low of $0.26.

Ondo Finance has also seen significant traction in the RWA market, with its Ondo US Dollar Yield Fund and Ondo Short-Term Government Bond Fund among the tokenized treasures assets to push the market over 100% in the last year to reach $4 billion.

According to DeFiLlama, the total value locked in Ondo Finance increased from $192 million in January 2024 to a peak of $650 million in October. At the time of writing, the TVL stood at $543 million.
