Vitalik defends Ethereum Foundation amid ongoing controversy
Vitalik responded to criticism leveled at Ethereum Foundation Executive Director Aya Miyagotchi and centralization concerns around the future of Ethereum.
“The future of the global computer is decentralized,” Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said in a Jan. 21 statement. jobresponding to a community member who raised concerns about centralization within the Ethereum Foundation, which recently announced changes to its leadership.
The comments come amid community calls to promote researcher and developer Danny Ryan, whose contributions to the Ethereum project transition from proof of work to proof of stake have been widely welcomed.
Thanks to the reforms, the foundation plans focus on leveraging technical expertise within foundation leadership and improving communication with developers and ecosystem builders.
Ryan’s supporters argue that his expertise aligns with Ethereum’s long-term goals, positioning him as a strong candidate for leadership despite Buterin’s strong stance on maintaining control over Foundation decisions.
Meanwhile, Miyaguchi, who has held the position since 2018, has faced critical community members on X, some blaming him for inefficiency within the Foundation.
Recently, widely followed cryptocurrency trader CoinMamba, a vocal critic of the Ethereum Foundation, called for Miyaguchi’s resignation.
CoinMamba urged the community to keep pressure on the Foundation, believing that such efforts could lead to its resignation, which could have a positive impact on Ethereum’s trajectory.
In response, Buterin strongly rejected the idea, stating that he was solely responsible for the decision of the Ethereum Foundation leadership team. He responded to recent community attacks and criticized community members for creating a toxic environment for Ethereum’s “top talent.”
“YOU MAKE MY JOB HARDER. And you diminish the chances that I will have any interest in doing “what you want,” he added.
Buterin reiterated that the ongoing reforms aim to establish a “real board of directors” for the Foundation, but until then he remains the final decision-maker on matters of direction.
Some community members were quick to criticize this, with market commentator abstractXBT raising concerns about the centralized nature of this position. Instead, they suggested the foundation should focus more on practical solutions, such as increasing developer support through hackathons and grants, rather than engaging in philosophical debates about leadership.
Buterin clarified, however, that Ethereum’s main mission remains decentralized. He stressed that the FE is “just one part” of a larger ecosystem and suggested focusing on reforming other organizations like Consensys, which could take on more responsibilities. He added:
“EF should not “middle curve”, it should confidently represent the aspects of Ethereum that it can effectively represent and deliberately create and maintain open space for other organizations to represent the other aspects of Ethereum .

Community members have expressed concerns regarding the Foundation’s periodic sales of ETH, questioning why it chooses to liquidate its assets instead of taking advantage of staking opportunities.
