Panama City votes to approve crypto payments for public services

Venmo users can now buy crypto directly through Exodus wallet

Panama City approved a measure allowing residents to pay public services using cryptocurrency.

Municipal Council vote To allow Bitcoin payments (BTC), Ethereum (Ethn), USD part (USDC), and attach (USDT) for services such as taxes, permits and fines.

A partner bank will convert crypto to US dollars at the time of payment, in accordance with legal requirements without adopting new legislation.

“Previous administrations have tried to advance a bill in the Senate to make it possible, but we found a simple way to do so without new legislation,” said the mayor of Panama City, Mayer Mizrachi. “Legally public institutions must receive funds in $, we therefore associate ourselves with a bank that will take care of the transaction receiving by crypto and will convert on site at $.

The new system gives residents a way to use crypto for daily transactions with the government, while ensuring that the city still receives payments in its official currency.

It also gives the growth of the Panama cryptography economy without obliging each institution to directly manage digital assets.

This step differs from El Salvador approachwhich made the legal tender of Bitcoin in 2021. The Panama model is optional and focused on compatibility with existing financial systems.
