May’s crypto hacks total $244m; Sui, Cetus claw back $157m
Crypto hacks resulted in around $ 244.1 million in losses in May 2025.
According to the blockchain security company, Peckshield, this marks a decrease of 39.29% compared to April figures. The month has recorded around 20 major incidents, with coordinated recovery efforts successfully freezing certain stolen assets.
The most notable development involved the collaborative response between Sui (Sui)) Validators and Cetus protocol following a massive feat of $ 220 million. Network participants managed to freeze $ 157 million in stolen funds, a recovery rate of 71% compared to the total amount of the flight.
Cetus exploits dominates the monthly losses
The Cetus protocol incident was the greatest hacking of the month and represented the majority of losses. According to the DEDAUB Blockchain Security Company, the attackers have exploited vulnerability in the most important bit checking mechanism.
This allowed them to manipulate the liquidity parameters by substantial margins and to establish significantly significant positions with a minimum of effort.
While the pirates successfully looted $ 220 million in the protocol, around $ 63 million remain in the operating portfolio, the rest fixed by the validator’s coordination.
The best exploits of the remaining month included the loss of $ 12 million in cork. An alleged strike affiliated with North Korea which caused losses of $ 5.2 million then came.
The MBU token underwent a feat of $ 2.2 million, while MapleStory Universe experienced a violation of $ 1.2 million and completed the five main incidents.
Despite the main absolute losses, May figures are an improvement compared to previous months in the context of the global security losses of 2025.
More than $ 1.63 billion in cryptocurrencies were stolen in the first quarter of this year. In addition, Peckshield said that almost 92% of all losses at the time were caused by the vulnerability of the appeal.
The January security incidents led to more than $ 87 million in stolen cryptocurrency, while February has increased $ 1.53 billion. This was mainly motivated by the massive appeal attack which ranks among the greatest cryptographic flights in history.
